Alce su voz has an exciting lineup of Spanish-language workshops planned for this spring and summer, starting with a community education workshop on civic engagement, to take place this Saturday, February 11 at the Evergreen Community Center and Library.
For our civic engagement workshop, hosted in collaboration with our longtime community partner Salud + Bienestar, we will welcome once more Latino Community Network Executive Director Aude Negrete. Ms. Negrete will discuss why civic engagement is important for our Spanish-speaking community and how we can communicate directly to our legislators in an impactful way that leads to positive change for our community. Delicious food catered by Gabby’s Peruvian restaurant be served at 10:30 am preceding the 11am workshop start time. Moreover, registered participants will be financially compensated for their time with ClinCard payments. The workshop will be held in Spanish, and two Spanish-English interpreters will be available for those who need language services. This workshop is funded through Alce su voz’s partnership with the Kansas Health Foundation. Registration for this workshop is closed; for those who are already registered, we’ll see you on Saturday!
The next workshop, to be held at Evergreen on March 11, will be specifically for Spanish-English interpreters, including professional interpreters, aspiring interpreters, and bilingual clinicians and clinical staff who are called upon to interpret at their workplace. Directors of Interpreter Education and Engagement Rommy Vargas of Spanish Ad Hoc Translations and Marixendra Alvarez of CJS Translation Services are forming a team of interpreters to work toward the professionalization of the interpreter role in Kansas, and March 11 will be the team’s kickoff meeting. The second interpreter workshop, to be held at Evergreen on May 6 will feature a virtual visit from Mara Youdelman of the National Health Law Program who will present the legal framework for Language Access in the United States. The interpreter team’s activities will be funded by our grant from the Office of Minority Health (OMH) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
On April 8, Celia Ruiz of UnitedHealthcare and Francisco (Paco) Martínez of the Children’s Mercy Kansas City Culture and Language Coaching Program will present at a south Wichita location (TBD) on how to work with a qualified professional interpreter (funded by the OMH grant), and on June 3, we look forward to hosting the Kansas Bilingualism Summit: Supporting Bilingualism for Latino Youth and Educating Future Bilingual Professionals, to be held at Evergreen.
In addition to these five workshops, we offer Spanish-language yoga classes on the first Saturday of every month. The classes are free, and we serve coffee and a light breakfast afterward.
For up-to-date information about any of these workshops and other events, please follow us on Facebook, visit our website, and sign up for our email list. If you have questions or would like to request an interpreter for a workshop, please email alcesuvoz@gmail.com.
